ITS PAINFUL

Advocate friends have demanded my Resignation along with my colleague Ashok's.

I am an Advocate since 1981. In fact the immediate past President of Bangalore Advocates Association Sri Putte Gowda and myself were enrolled on the same day. In my capacity as the Law Minister I have  always tried to positively respond to the needs of the Courts and Advocates and I think my friends in the Bar will agree with me.

I was really sad to read about the demand of my   Resignation from  the the delegation of Advocates Association. What are my omissions and commissions?

On 2nd March, which can rightly be termed as Black Friday what should not have happened became an unfortunate and tragic reality. On that day  I had left  by road  at 5-30 am to reach Kalasa (Chikmagalur) for the Election meetings, as I have been given the responsibility of the district in the ensuing Bye elections.  At the time of my leaving the capital I did not have any premonition that troubles of that magnitude would erupt on that day. Even as I reached Kalasa at 12-00 pm, I came to know about the war like situation. I spoke to Police Commissioner, DGP, Home minister and Chief minister.( may not be in the same order). One knows that Kalasa is at a distance of nearly 350 kms from Bengaluru. Even as I came to know about the ghastly happenings, I started my return journey. On that day I traversed around 700 kms. I reached CM’s residence straight and discussed with him about the situation. By that time CM had completed few rounds of meetings with Home department officers.

On the following day High Court had announced a sort of holiday to all the courts in Bengaluru. Incidentally, a Lawyer friend of mine who is the President of Tumkur Advocates Association had lost his wife on the previous day. I went to his place. It was an ironic death. His wife who was a well known Doctor, after finishing her customary rounds entered a ward, sat on a cot and felt a little uneasiness. Before medical help could reach her in her own hospital the Doctor passed away. And she was only 42. My friend was inconsolable. He hugged me and broke down saying 'she has left me an orphan'. I was really disturbed. After making feeble attempts to calm him down, I left that place one hour later. Both Home Minister and I along with our officers continued our deliberations to diffuse the situation. The one thing that I should have done and failed to do was meeting the injured(both advocates and police) in different hospitals. As High court had announced holiday, I could  not go to City Civil Court Premises too.

On Sunday, Hon'ble CM, Home Minister and myself decided to attempt to bring both Advocate fraternity and Media friends to a negotiating table. Time was also fixed. I spoke to many senior Advocates including the past Advocate Generals, members of the Bar Council etc., All agreed that this meeting is much needed and accepted to attend. Similarly I spoke to my friends in the media field. (both from Print and Electronic) Very well known personalities in the media appreciated the effort and agreed to be a part of this meeting. But Alas. The 6-00 pm meeting could not take place as the president of the Advocates Association could not make it.( He was in his native place apparently for his father's ceremony)

Yesterday again we continued our efforts. I met our Advocate General. Then had discussions with two Hon'ble Judges of High Court one of whom is the Administrative Judge of Bengaluru. A formula was envisaged. After discussing with our State's Chief Secretary, I and Sri Ashok met The Hon'ble Chief Justice.  We explained our preparedness to move forward to end this conflict by implementing around 7 points immediately that are felt necessary.

We are hopeful to see both media and advocates who have their respective issues through their representatives at the negotiating table today. We have asked the CM to reach Bengaluru canceling all his engagements from his tour. It may happen only if our friends are ready.

These being the hard efforts made in the prevailing situation, I really do not know the reason of my Advocates friends' demand. I am ready to accede to that demand for resignation, if that facilitates smooth functioning of Courts thus putting an end to lakhs of litigants and also facilitates the healthy relationship between the Advocates and Media. My sincere appeal to both the responsible professions of our society is this "When two powerful Elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers".

Please announce a full stop. The mudslinging is not doing good to either party. Black coat should not be humiliated in the manner as being done as this BLACK COAT has produced thousands of First rate Patriots. Similarly Independent Press of our country is responsible for our many rights getting protected. We have to relax our rigid stands in the interests of our larger society. I appeal once again.

Its a really good initiative from a minister's point of view. Holding such a esteem position and acting responsibly shows your great degree of leadership. Having said so I believe this dreadful day was expected in hand and a worst was expected. As a common man I would expect with your position and power should have stopped this from ever happening.
What I meant is 'Prevention is better than a cure'.
End of the day the both the Advocate group and Media group may compromise and work in harmony but still the wounds will nurture the bitterness. The losses and pain are again loaded on the taxpayers and the commoners.

This incident is another "tip of iceberg". I observe raising intolerance in Karnataka and it has has to do lot many things towards strong implementation of law and order which includes laws related to 'press and media'.
More educative programs to educate people about "law and order" may help us more as a part of primary prevention of such accidents/incidents. I shall use this dais to strongly urge Govt to start educative programs on many issues and not mere law and order for over all development of Karnataka. Resignation is not key to solve any issue-I feel. Mature, reasonable, bold-political commitment is the key to "user-friendly governance".

Dear Suresh Sir,
As there is degradation in fields of society thereis degradation in the quality of both the professions under question. It is amusing to know that how your resignation helps to ease the situation. Since your roll as mininster is helping to improve living condition of people and system, you have to devote your time more towards that area. Please don't yield to unjustified demands. People are not ready to loose you as minister. Hence continue to strive hard in improving your constituency and state also. All the best!!!!!!!!

I am a MBA student studying in UK, i have been involved in RSS and other activities from chilhood and an alltime supporter of the BJP. But, seeing the present situation I am very disappointed by the people doing all those politics, and inturn damaging the party image. Being supporter of the BJP I'm not sure where the party may head in future, I have never imagined this kind of incidents to take place in the governmment. As young citizen of Bangalore I would atleast accept a good governance in the state and the city, but situation is no different in the city corporation also. Every other day hearing about one or the other scam. Drastic measures need to be taken in this matter, I think the next coming
mayor should be of clean image an especialy working towards the betterment of the city. And in the case of the empty minister seats I would ask You to name those with clean image and works for the state I hope after I return back home next year the conditon of bangalore and karnataka will be good. And my dream of Bangalore becoming a true International city like London is fullfiled.

Well wisher

It is nice to hear that you are ready to resign even though no fault of your's. You are the one in few politicians whom people of Karnataka respect a lot. I think they just want to make you scapegoat nothing more than that. Your reply for asking for resignation too is true and make you a proud leader of Karnataka. I will quote what few people used to say to Vajayapee, "Right person in wrong party and I am adding one more line-in wrong profession"-Basavaraj Tonagatti

Suresh Sir,

Resigning from the post will not resolve the prevailing situation. I suggest that the lawyers who are responsible for this mishaps should be banned from the bar council. Then you investigate the case. If they found guilty, delete there names from the bar council & they will not be eligible to accept any other cases whatsoever.
this is the steps we expect from you sir & not resigning. You are the only hope for BJP at this juncture.

Guess what!

Media quoted only the first sentence this blog post & ignored the rest.

This is Yellow page journalism.
Picking and choosing what they want & ignoring rest. I am not advocate or do I like them. But Media is using their platform to humiliate advocates which is bad.

Sir, You are biased, even in your blog you have chosen not to say anything about the atrocities committed by the police against lawyers. I always hated Kumaraswamy. But today I feel he is the only politician who stands for truth. he is the only politician who has the guts to face media and tell the public the truth. He is willing to sacrifice his political career for truth. I strongly feel you and your government people do not live up to the expectation of being a fair politician like Kumaraswamy. Today I being an advocate, RSS worker, and BJP supporter am really consider my political stand. I am sorry to say, The act that you are exhibiting before the media is really not that of a leader that people deserve. TILL TODAY YOU HAVE NOT PRESENTED THE PROPER FACTS BEFORE THE PEOPLE OF KARNATAKA WHO STILL THINK LAWYERS AS GOONDA, GOONS ETC.

Swami Vivekananda once told-If religion mix with politics then that is the end of India. Now that is clearly visible in Karnataka. Request you to come out of BJP and do social work what you are doing now without joining politics. Shame on Karnataka politics and shame on BJP. Politics is not the only way to do social justice. Hence I request you to come out of such dirty politics and maintain your existing clean image. Hope you heed my request.
